Bought this unit for about two weeks already. For replacing my old Oppo 105 (don't recall the exact version, for its so long), for playing 4K disk
and possibly for playing old DVD and CD...whatsoever..
Haven't bought a new disc player for many years and before the COVID, the Pioneer LX800 had never arrive as deposit being paid for a year.
My favour is mostly on the music side so my use of the player is usually for playing CD/SACD, musical, and may be some opera and concerts. I seldom watch movie using any players, except using my android TV Netfix or TV box. So my comment or ideas below is only cover my little exp. on my preferred areas.. And right now I am only using Goldmund two channel amp with internal dac only, not a standard home theater setup.
My purchase was only based on some information from the internet and the comment based on UDP800, and I think UDP900 must be better than its brother. Anyway, here it is.
My initial/brief impression for the moment :
1. Very good/excellent CD play back (actually, think its like playing SACD instead of CD) . Its actually very good, and I think its already worth the most potion of its retail price... according to my limited listening exp.
As of the SACD playback, I think its outstanding as well, but I did not listen alot SA recently..and I think the most surprised me is the CD sound quality. And for the sound quality, thinks its already beyond the blu-ray machine league...sound very calm, quiet, natural and a bit sweet I think. (but reminded that I have done some tweaks on its already : like through an hifi electrical process unit, replaced fuse and used my old cerabuc footers under it...
And also the "stage", is very spacious and wide, and imaging is solid as well.
2. Blu-ray/DVD playback : I think imaging is solid an good enough for me, as the layering and the color is good (but my TV is not a costly one and before using the player, the imaging on my TV is already quite solid through some electrical filtering tweak.. . And right now I am not playing projector now,,,so imaging/display comment from me (the low end video viewer) end here. For the video sound quality I think its very very good as well, as the unit did reveal some sound detail of my old dvds, blu-rays that I have not heard before. And for some musical concert, some moment of sudden drum attack and some giant orchestra playing did surprised me and never heard in other occasion.
3. Some downfall: thinking that machine interfacing may need some more polish (hope that a more mature firmware could fix), the remote control is not control it as smooth as you expected... ..sometimes the response is out of phase. And the on-screen menu is not as polish as Oppo.. and I think its a bit not complete. And the paper manual is detail, but some information still missing like the fuse box rating..(later I found out its only show on diagram with very small figure), the filters build-in is not explained..etc. Bare in mind if you interested in the unit, its user interface is a bit odd I think.
4. Overall hardware buildup is very good and solid.
5. After sales service and support services from p&o IS very responsive and helpful. Thanks.
6. Downfall The relay sound is very obvious and loud between tracks...its a bit odd.
Some features I still not explored many features, like file playing, hdmi music out, balanced out .. and I think is it possible to using its internal DAC alone..? I think its may be possible and I think its internal dac is quite good already.
Other brothers if have some exp. please share with me as well.
And BTW, think that the machine may need to sing a few tracks before warmed up...different from other player. And the sound get smoother as played awhile..
My few cents.. |
