Yes, better borrow and test the SC, IC, and PC first before buying, if you can. Observe the sound change for 'raw sound' and with tune control (line straight on/off) for every change. Generally speaking, when line straight is on, the sound should be more balance, quieter background, and with clearer details. If not, there may be an issue with either the IC or SC or the source.
If you are still not satisfy with the 590AII, I think your upgrade path for Lux should not aim at 509U. However, for pre and power, there are choices from other brands within the price range to compete with the Lux 600/800.
