A friend gave me a pair of clone 1sc. The cabinet is of very good quality & looks beautiful. Tweeter is Scan-Speak, Mid-range is SEAS. Have finished modding them a while ago. After continuous burning-in for about 2 weeks, I brought last Saturday the modd 1sc to a Hiendy friend's home for auditioning. The tweeters were still with poor old sponge on them.
He uses ProAc D2 on TAOC stands, driven by Luxman 30W/ch class A. He bought the D2 & TAOC 2nd hand about a month ago.
After running some tracks through the 1sc, before 7pm, he got hungry already. But he asked to play still several tracks more with the 1sc before going for dinner. Of course I agreed. Since the beginning of using the modd 1 sc, he already confirmed that it is the same ProAc sound, with smooth & sweet highs/mids, highly detailed, rich in harmonics & good imaging. Bass is not comparable to larger speakers but for its size, it is still substantial. I guess that the modd units are as good as the original if not better. Will bring them later to another friend's place to compare with his genuine, original 1sc. He is the one who gave me the clones.
Perhaps I should rename them "Super 1sc" instead of "clone 1sc"! I replaced the sponge on tweeters during Monday evening. There seemed to be some more improvement [could be my perception only].
Total cost of components for modding the clone 1sc is about $3.7k.
For Tweeter, each channel : Duelund standard brown resistor x 1 , ClarityCap 250V ESA caps x 2, Solen L16 [7-strand 4N copper] air-core inductor x 1, Mundorf 1mm silver/gold wire.
For mid-range, each channel : Mills MRA 12W non-inductive wire-wound resistor x 1, UCC cap [from Taiwan] x 2, Solen S16 [solid 4N copper] air-core inductor x 2, Furutech Alpha-14 OCC cryogenic & demagnetised copper wire.
Vishay MKP 0.01uF capacitor x 8 in parallel to each large cap.
High purity copper binding post from "diysong" Taiwan x 8 pcs for bi-wiring.
0.5 kg wool fibre for stuffing inside cabinets.
Only the Mundorf & Furutech wires plus the binding posts already cost almost $2k.
Sounds crazy to spend $3.7k on pair of clone 1sc. But I think all the costs are well-spent. The speakers are re-born! 可算脫胎換骨.
