Hi brother, it's a long story but I just summaries a few key issues:
.Brother Jan Hau is using a whole set of Nagra pre+power combo. This is the right choice for the start. I have also used Nagra PLL separately in the past without much success and also confirmed after auditioned this many times during home visits. I still believe using PLL separately is not a good idea and Nagra's own pyramid amp or 845 tube poweramp is the best companion. To me, Nagra has a special unique taste. It's crystal clear, fast transient and almost noble in nature, yet friendly, easy listening and totally engaging. And I always prefer a tube preamp, so this is definitely one of my favorite gears.
.Jan Hau has made a good decision choosing a very high quality bookshelf speaker instead of a floorstanding one. In HK, most audiophiles will be tempted to use a floorstanding speaker (including me) but it usually gives you more trouble than good. In reality, it's much more difficult to make a floorstanding speaker to disappear sonically, and the quantity of bass is always a problem in relatively smaller places. And with multiple drivers and more complicated crossover network, coherency from low to high fz is much more difficult to obtain for floorstanding speakers, especially those with 2 bass drivers.
.A system with a "tube" element somewhere in the chain will usually have a more engaging sound and less tiring on long listening session. And Jan Hau's preamp is a "tube". That's what I like.
.And a Hi-end system cannot be called Hi-end without a (properly setup) LP turntable too. LP is still the most Hi-fidelity source readily available in the market today in my opinion, although true 24-192 source from a very good CAS system is also truly amazing.
.And also I like his Tube pre + Transistor power configuration. That's what I am using for my own system too :D |
