Best free music creation software?

Hi,

Does anybody know of good composition software? I play some guitar so have used powertab which is good for guitar, but it's not great for multiple instruments... I'd love something which makes it easy to add tracks, enter notes maybe using the keyboard as a piano as you play along? And if in the end it can sound good, a bonus although from quick search, buying instruments 'banks' or paying software might be the only bet, but not a problem for me so far; just want to tinker.

Any help will be apprecited.
