I rent a lot of bluray movies discs, but I seldom write a detailed report. This will be my exception, but sorry, only in English, because that saves me a lot of effort and helps ease my neck pain issue.

I rent bluray on a weekly basis at Hung Hom shop as a habit, most of the time rip them on hdd, play them when free, and delete afterwards. The one I am going to write about is “ The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”. It is a comedy, drama genre movie. I originally did not intend to watch this movie so soon (due to a lot of movies pending) but this disc failed to be ripped by my computer that restarted each and every time I tried to do so. So I have to watch it before returning the same just to save my money.

On playing this movie, I found it is over 2 hours. My initial reaction is this maybe too long for me and just hope it is not too boring for the sake of saving my $25 rental charge. But as I played it along, I found it is very interesting, entertaining, inspiring and funny as well. But as a warning, there are neither explosive nor testing scenes in it as you can tell from this movie type, yet the dialogue is very, very clear – maybe a test point here. I have to confess I really love the “British way of saying English”. It’s elegant intonation, beautiful and yet simple words and phrases. Unlike the US type, just too quick to hear, like hearing a rap song, no good/interest for/from an old man like me. And you have Judy Dench from 007, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, and Dev Patel …. as the cast, all are aged except the latest.

Back to the movie content, it is about a group of seven “British” retirees, each have their own background, lives, disappointments and expectation, lured to stay in an Indian newly restored hotel, which appealed them by the “photoshop-edited” advertisement and found it turned out to be much less luxurious than its advertisement, nevertheless slowly begins to charm in unexpected ways. The movie appeals to me because it talks about life after retirement, which sounds not so distant from me. Different people have different ways of seeing life after retirement. Someone complains it all the times, someone wants to change, explore it in new dimensions, someone wants to make past regret right and someone simply has to find a job to make ends meet, which is very realistic to me but of course get dramatized in the movie. I even give it 8 out of 10 ratings in the IMDb.com, deduct one point for someone has to die in a comedy, another one for being so “quick-turn classic happy ending”.  

So that’s it, I highly recommend it to all of you. At least rent it and give it a try, watch it with your loved ones, it is very touching. Don’t just limit yourself to those hard core action films, play this and invite her to join your movie theatre, and maybe you’ll get reward.  I think I am going to buy one.  Woo, it is over 2,500 words already, can’t imagine if I write it in Chinese….

And finally the motto of the movie: Everything will be all right in the end, and if it is not all right, it is not yet the end.” – very positive, inspiring and touching though it seems a bit overdone and unreachable for a negative thinking guy like me.
