Pop Up Advertisements

For the past few months, I have been getting pop-up advertisements when I click on my IE browser. It does not happen all the time, maybe once or twice everytime I open the browser, till the next time I open it. It does not always happen at the beginning but sometimes, happen after a few minutes.of browsing. I note sometimes the pop up carry links such as

http://ad.adserver.com/....

or

http://ad.doubleclick.net/....

I am not sure which freeware that I installed caused this. Could anyone advise how do I remove the feature without disabling the pop up function?
