NAS-->SBT-->DDC/DAC/PRE-AMP-->POWER AMP WITHOUT PC

Sorry for posting in English (to save time) and thank you for your patience and time.

Just start playing cas/dac, bought the Logitech SBT for its simplicity, would like to upgrade a dac but have the following preference: -

1)    Do not want to use pc as a player because present pc power supply is very noisy (change to a fanless power supply needs $1K?).

2)    Bought Logitech SBT to substitute a pc for its simplicity and want to keep it as a player.

3)    Currently using an usb hdd docking to house an hdd to feed the SBT via usb cable then coaxial out to av receiver then to power amp.

4)    Will consider installing EDO in SBT to enable usb port output high res file, but that will require another way of feeding the song files in the hdd to SBT.

5)    Buying a synology nas ($1K or more) might solve the above (4) issue but not sure if the synology can pair with the SBT (without using a pc).

6)    Would prefer a dac, which can also be used as a pre-amp with xlr output to drive my Proceed amp3 power amp.

7)    Borrowed and tried the Asus Xonar Essence One from a net fd, generally satisfied with the quality (within that price range), but suspect the Asus needs a pc to install the ASIO/USB driver to play with (its USB not XMOS..?).

8)    Can adding a DDC (another $2-3k?) in between the SBT and the Asus solve the problem? I.e.- no needs to use pc to play song files.

9)      May as well consider skipping the use of SBT as a last resort, and buy a total solution dac instead, but still want it have xlr output, enough gain to use as a pre-amp, can play files including 24/196 from an hdd housed in a usb hdd docking.

10)  My budget for a dac is below $10k, second hand product is ok/preferable, if Asus is good enough and serves my requirement (xlr output/pre-amp), then it might be a good choice/start and can save money.

11)  A second hand Mytek 192 DSD DAC might be a good choice, but it seems to have many options/jumper setting that could be a bit complicated to an entry-level user like me.

suggest to buy a NAS for SBT.

if you connect the USB drive to SBT directly, the SBT will run the squeezebox server on itself with it limited processing power.

thx for your suggestion, is the synology logitech media server software comes with the synology nas or is it required to be downloaded from synology support web site and installed in the nas by user?

thx, plugin installed into the synology nas, connected to the sbt via a router/lan hub, then sbt usb out(after installed EDO) to a dac playing wav files without the use of a personal computer. is that correct?

any recommendation of a good c/p one bay synology nas with 256mb ram or above ? thx.

there are only 2 choices for 1 bay synology, DS112 or DS112j
with synology you can also use DS audio to stream music (controlled by handled device Android/iOS)

Suggestion:

- get a DAC which using generic Linux USB driver. It allows you to connect via USB directly with SBT (EDO). USB is better than coaxial miles away. (eg. Zodiac, benchmark dac2, Anedio D2)

- get a QNAP for music server. It is better than synology. always get a 2 bay model for backup. Your music is valuable assets than any of your gear. Suggest 219p. This PC stuff is cheap comparing to any hifi gear. Don't save but buy a powerful one. Run a lot smoother and you won't need upgrade at least 10 years.

- save money to get a quality USB cable.

will look into it in details, and i enjoy more researching than buying(my bad habit), besides, itchy to change to a taoc rack as well.

clifflam Hing, no offense but in my case, coaxial is better than usb (SBT with WelbourneLab PSU > mbl 1511f). Probably because of the interconnect being used and also the design of the DAC itself. So I would think it's case by case.

Yes, QNap is pretty good as the NAS for SBT. Netgear is good too.

I suggest rklpoon Hing:
- buy a 2-bay NAS (more memory and more power are always better; and gigabit LAN support is also plus)
- buy a dedicate gigabit ethernet switch (for connecting to SBT and NAS, a few hundred dollar)
- buy 2 CAT7 cables (e.g. AQ, inakustik, you can find 2nd hand available)
- buy a 2nd second hand DAC to try out your taste

SSD's price going down much now. So you may also consider to use SSD for your NAS.

Of course, it all depends on your budget

Yes, budget comes first. I will try to squeeze/save up more money for this project.

BTW, can logitech media server be installed in the netgear nas to steam files to sbt? I found the sbt media server is very slow(due to slow cpu,? can't complain much for its function at this price) and I anticipate more files will accumulate as I rip my cd collection.

Yes I am using Netgear Ultra 2 and it's good!!! Using HDD in SBT should be slow because the processing power of SBT itself is limited.

In my Opinion :
NAS :
Yes, buy a NAS with Better CPU & Ram , It's made the SBT Server running faster.

I prefer buy 1 Bay, or
Buy 2 bay but only install 1 HDD,
( some 2 bay model have more powerful CPU & Ram)
because one HDD, use less power ,and less vibration (It's very important)  .  
For music back up, Use another Portable HDD la.

Use Screw to install the HDD inside  the NAS tighten.

Use SSD is the best, But if you have small burget,
Buy 2.5" inch HDD is better than 3.5" inch HDD,
and this is very important because 3.5" HDD is very noise when running,
and It's need more power too .

Don't install many Apps. at the NAS, Only install SBT Server.
especially some photo share function at the NAS,
It need many CPU & Ram value to running it.

Pls. 平放 the Nas , Don't 直立 . use Isolation feet is also have good result.
If you use SSD , 平放 or 直立 also OK.  It doesn't matter.

Yes, Use a Lan hub between the NAS & SBT
Don't just connect them to your Wifi Router directly.

Use Cat 7 lan Cable with 磁環 at both end.

Use a 環牛 Power Supply. for NAS & the Lan hubs also.
