Since phono cartridges are velocity transducers, we may put it this way:
3.54cm/sec denotes the velocity of the stylus at the middle of a vinyl record.
5.10cm/sec denotes the velocity of the stylus at the outermost groove of a record.
If an MC cart delivers an output of 0.24mV(3.54cm/sec 1kHz), that means, ceteris paribus, it may give you as high as 0.35mV at higher velocity(i.e. 5.10cm/sec 1 kHz).
If an MC cart delivers an output of 0.24mV(5.10cm/sec 1 kHz), that means, ceteris paribus, it can only give you as high as 0.17mV at lower velocity(3.54cm/sec 1 kHz).
FACT: HIGHER VELOCITY, HIGHER OUTPUT. LOWER VELOCITY, LOWER OUTPUT.
ZYX low output versions represent the former example. You may find the output "rather abundant" if you have a total MC gain of 60dB.
It is generally believed that the low output version of ZYXs offer better linearity, wider bandwidth, better transparency, better dynamics, better soundstage than its HIGH output versions. |
