Sumiko Announces Three New Phono Cartridges and 78 RPM Stylus

The new Blue Point No. 3 High and Blue Point No. 3 Low phono cartridges replace the venerable Blue Point No. 2. Featuring a similar low-internal vibration body and mounting block as the recently updated moving magnet (MM) line, the Blue Point No. 3 is able to separate the cartridge’s generator from mechanical vibration more effectively than ever before. The result is an affordable moving coil (MC) design that produces unparalleled detail and stereo separation.

Both models benefit from a new shell design and a smoothly bevelled front fascia that allows for excellent visibility of the stylus tip when mounting. The Blue Point No.3 High continues Sumiko’s history of affordable, high performance MC cartridges designs that are compatible with any MM phono stage. The Blue Point No.3 Low is Sumiko’s most accessible low output moving coil cartridge, serving as the perfect companion to most high-performance, affordable phono stages.


Celebration 40 Limited Edition

The new limited-edition Celebration 40 phono cartridge (above) is revealed in honor of Sumiko’s fortieth anniversary and is the latest refinement of the award-winning Pearwood Celebration II. Celebration 40 now implements the same solid, ultra-low-mass 75μm x 2.5μm Microridge stylus as the company's flagship Palo Santos Presentation. Adding the Microridge stylus is revelatory when it comes to micro detail and spatiality. The plumwood body accurately embodies the spirit of the Celebration design.

Blue Point No. 3 assembles its sonic picture from the ground up with its low-end response. Full and warm yet defined and textured, the cosiness of the bass will invite you right in. Both versions of the Blue Point 3 feature 0.3 x 0.7 mil elliptical styli attached to an aluminum cantilever and feature coils of “high purity” copper. The output differences, 2.5mV for the high output version and .5mV for the low output version (both @1kHz) result from the number of copper coil turns on the former, which also affects internal impedance.

The high output version’s is 135 ohms verses the low output’s 28 ohms (still relatively high in today’s world of ultra-low impedance MCs). The HO version has the default 47kOhm load impedance versus the low output version’s recommended loading being >100 Ohms. Otherwise, the specs are identical, and the two units look identical as well. Frequency response is 13Hz-35kHz, channel separation is rated at 30dB@1kHz, Balance is <1dB@1kHz, compliance is 12x10-6cm/dyn@100Hz. VTA is 20 degrees, and tracking force range is 1.8-2.2 grams.
