Many audiophile commented that HiFi will very much different from live music.  With Hifi, you are listening to the illusion of 3D sound stage created or re-constructed by audio engineer.  That is probably true.  However, with proper technique, one can record very close to what human hearing when sitting at a specific spot "Binaural Sound".  I brought this record to experience this type of recording and it is quite an interesting experience.

More details of the "Making of " Binaural Sound is available with the following link.

A very specialised recording instrument is used to record what people heard at a particular spot.

You can see the "dummy" with "external ears" and "shoulder".  They are important to get the best possible sound close to what our ears receives.

See the following paper regarding 3D Sound Synthesis what contribute to our ability to determine the position of the sound source.  Cheski's method is trying to record covering all factors of 3D sound.

I'm still fine tuning my showroom using this record.  For the music records in this collection, don't expect it is super "3D" which many audiophile records "create" or "synthesise".  It is a very natural "3D" just like you are there listening to live music.

For a few test records, Cheski recorded sound near to the listener position to demonstrate the capability of the binaural sound.  They also help tuning the setting as reference records.

It should, at least in theory, be the ideal recording method for headphone listening. Not so sure if this works for normal listening though...... Sound is picked up by mics at ear positions but is reproduced by speakers 6 ft away from listener.

So far it works fine for normal hifi set-up listening as well.

They have done this kind of tests/recordings in Germany (by the German National Radio) twenty years ago, and they found out that you can either optimise for speaker listening or optimise for headphone, one can't optimise both without a lot of compromises. May be now something new has been discovered?

It is actually best done in a stereo dipole configuration with cross talk cancellation. The recording technique takes into account the pinnae effect. But headphone playback do not involve the pinnae effect - less natural.
