與別不同的四季

四季是耳熟能詳的曲目，但這個版本卻與慣聽的有很大分別。
這是Nicholas Harnoncourt七十年代的錄音，手頭上是黑膠唱片，共六張一套，現將其中一段轉成數碼讓大家欣賞。Harnoncourt主張用period instrument來演繹不同年代的音樂作品，比如Bach, Vivaldi 應該用當時期的樂器才能演繹出作曲者的感情和要表達的訊息。
這其實帶出兩個問題，首先是樂器， Harnoncourt認為巴洛克時期現代的樂器跟作曲時的樂器無論在物料及音色有很大差異，以小提琴為例，當年用的是羊腸線，現代的是金屬線，音準亦不一樣，現代A above middle C 是440Hz, 而考究後當時是以415H為A的，比現代低了點。所謂Period Instrument就是樂器要符合作曲年代。另一例子是巴洛克時期的keyboard只有harpsicord 及 claricord，鋼琴是稍後才出現的，那麼現代鋼琴能否演繹出巴洛克時期音樂的精髓? 問題在於當年的harpsicord已經失傳，現代版harpsicord音色差，人們寧可聽鋼琴！如果能重造當年樂器，那自然是最佳選擇。
另一個問題是演繹方式， Harnoncourt認為現代演繹方式跟當年有很大差異，不符合當年文化，他認為當年音樂相當於演講，音符等於語言，表達以清晰為主，現在則以抽像意念主導，類似於畫畫。
聽慣了現代版本的四季，乍聽Harnoncourt 的演繹，只覺是完全不同的曲目，強弱對比分明，殘章斷句很多，衝擊甚大。

Spring – Concerto in E Major
Allegro
Springtime is upon us.
The birds celebrate her return with festive song,
and murmuring streams are softly caressed by the breezes.
Thunderstorms, those heralds of Spring, roar, casting their dark mantle over heaven,
Then they die away to silence, and the birds take up their charming songs once more.

Largo
On the flower-strewn meadow, with leafy branches rustling overhead, the goat-herd sleeps, his faithful dog beside him.

Allegro
Led by the festive sound of rustic bagpipes, nymphs and shepherds lightly dance beneath the brilliant canopy of spring.


Summer – Concerto in g-minor
Allegro non molto
Beneath the blazing sun's relentless heat
men and flocks are sweltering,
pines are scorched.
We hear the cuckoo's voice; then sweet songs of the turtle dove and finch are heard.
Soft breezes stir the air….but threatening north wind sweeps them suddenly aside. The shepherd trembles, fearful of violent storm and what may lie ahead.

Adagio e piano - Presto e forte
His limbs are now awakened from their repose by fear of lightning's flash and thunder's roar, as gnats and flies buzz furiously around.

Presto
Alas, his worst fears were justified, as the heavens roar and great hailstones beat down upon the proudly standing corn.

Autumn – Concerto in F Major
Allegro
The peasant celebrates with song and dance the harvest safely gathered in.
The cup of Bacchus flows freely, and many find their relief in deep slumber.

Adagio molto
The singing and the dancing die away
as cooling breezes fan the pleasant air,
inviting all to sleep
without a care.

Allegro
The hunters emerge at dawn,
ready for the chase,
with horns and dogs and cries.
Their quarry flees while they give chase.
Terrified and wounded, the prey struggles on,
but, harried, dies.

Winter – Concerto in f-minor
Allegro non molto
Shivering, frozen mid the frosty snow in biting, stinging winds;
running to and fro to stamp one's icy feet, teeth chattering in the bitter chill.

Largo
To rest contentedly beside the hearth, while those outside are drenched by pouring rain.

Allegro
We tread the icy path slowly and cautiously, for fear of tripping and falling.
Then turn abruptly, slip, crash on the ground and, rising, hasten on across the ice lest it cracks up.
We feel the chill north winds coarse through the home despite the locked and bolted doors…
this is winter, which nonetheless brings its own delights.

關於Harnoncourt, 值得一提是他與Gustav Leonhardt合作出版了Bach的全套Cantata, 用的是period instrument, 除少數用女高音外，大部份均用男聲，這套是第一套Bach Cantata全集，由Teldec出版，完成這套193首Bach Cantata共用了二十年，由1971至1990。

手頭上這套Vivaldi Concerti共六張黑膠，收錄兩位指揮家68-78年的錄音，由Telefunken出版。

Antonio Vivaldi composed "The Four Seasons" in 1723, but it was not published until 1725. It comprises four separate violin concertos and is considered to be a prime example of music from the baroque period. Each of the four concertos is different, as Vivaldi intended to provide a musical experience that reflects the different seasons. Originally, "The Four Seasons" was part of a greater selection that included 12 different pieces. These were separated from the original 12 because they stand alone as a separate movement within the original opus.
What is in Concerto No. 1?
Not many people realize that Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" includes sonnets that were written to correspond with each one. The first sonnet, "Spring," is about cheerful bird song and bubbling brooks. It is also about flowery meadows and the simple joy of dancing in order to greet the arrival of spring. The music of "Spring" includes three separate movements within this first concerto. When you hear the first movement begin, you can practically hear the way people dance as they joyfully greet winter just as portrayed in the sonnet. The trills and twitters resemble birdsong, and the bold yet graceful music makes its presence known, just as the spring cannot be held back, nor can Vivaldi's "Spring." Chances are that you recognize it if you have ever been to a wedding or if you regularly watch movies. "Spring" is arguably the most famous sonnet from Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons."
What is in Concerto No. 2?
The second concerto in "The Four Seasons" is meant to reflect the harsh sun and temperamental storms during the days of summer. Also consisting of three movements, it begins in almost a melancholy key, seeming to invoke the image of the sun rising above an earth that expects to be hot as the day wears on. The sonnet that is written for "Summer" speaks about the harshness of summer and the way the sun scorches the earth and all that inhabits the land. Summer is not complete without the harsh, yet quick, summer storms. Listening to Vivaldi's "Summer" conjures an image of an incredible storm as the violins repeatedly hit chords and phrases that correlate with the torrential rains of summer. Calmness seems to come about when suddenly, the musical sky opens up and is filled with thunder and lightning, proving once again that summer is not without its threats to the people and their land. A sorrowful sound is released from the strings of the violins, almost as if they are asking why such a harsh season must be endured, begging for relief from the unconquerable heat and inevitable storms. There is a sense of urgency to simply survive in the dead heat that Vivaldi's "Summer" brings forth to the audience. You cannot help feeling exactly what Vivaldi wanted you to feel in his second sonnet of "The Four Seasons," "Summer."

What is in Concerto No. 3?
"Autumn," third sonnet of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons," is reminiscent of celebrating a happy harvest complete with dancing and song. The music of these three movements is much lighter than "Summer," and it conjures images of simple happiness and people speaking to one another in happy tones, as reflected by the violins in the first movement. The same can be said within the sonnet that corresponds with this concerto. At the start of the second movement, the tone feels very light-hearted as the people have celebrated and drifted off to sleep to enjoy their exploits in peace. In "Autumn," the third movement begins with a more serious tone as is reflected in the sonnet. The sonnet speaks of hunters who are off at dawn to follow an animal, likely a fox, but the animal cannot handle the overwhelming feeling of impending death. In the music, Vivaldi represents the animal's distraught by being a bit quieter and more melancholy as would be appropriate because within the sonnet, the animal dies.
What is in Concerto No. 4?
The last sonnet of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons," "Winter," is in a minor key, and the audience immediately has a sense of sadness and grief as is intended by the key. Listening to the music, it is easy to feel the scene Vivaldi has created in his sonnet for the fourth concerto. In "Winter," Vivaldi creates the image of someone forced to endure the cold outside. You can actually feel the poor soul's teeth chatter as they work to keep from freezing to death. In the second movement, the music loses some of its urgency as it reflects actually being inside keeping warm by the fire, escaping the cold unlike other unfortunates as pictured in the first movement. In the third and final movement of "Winter," urgency returns but has a slightly different sound from the first movement of Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons." Imagine someone walking cautiously on the ice, slowly and deliberately, only to hasten when the sound of cracking ice is heard. The music picks up and becomes far more bold as it is meant to reflect the harsh winds of winter fighting to get inside an otherwise warm space, only to end in such a way that leaves the audience full of hope, knowing that although winter has come, spring can only follow

四季是巴洛克時期的作品，剛剛又將另一名家巴哈的黑膠作品轉為數碼檔案，這次是用24/96格式，好處是有利於消除黑膠的噪音，在轉化後，數碼檔案重播質量比原來的黑膠更好。當然，這需要很多編輯工作，將種種不同噪音消除，工作量很大。

這都是用結他來演巴哈的作品，變巴洛克時期還沒有結他，較接近的樂器是lute。演奏者Christopher Parkening是美國人，其中幾首是他將巴哈作品轉為結他，也有是其他人轉的。
