This is a valid consideration for interested buyers. As mentioned by the Absolute Sound Review, which actually has nothing bad to say about its sound, construction and interface, buyers should pay attention that this doesn’t look like a network player, at least for now unless future firmware opens that option.
If I understand correctly you need to sync all your music files to the internal 1TB drive before you can play, although this might not be very important to some, but if you already have a very large music library say on a NAS, you have to consider the file transfer time and the issue of data redundancy if you rely solely on the internal hard drive on the Sony. 1TB drive is not terribly hard to fill up if you rip files in 1:1 FLAC, ALAC, WAV or other file formats, especially DSD which as we all know is very big in size, around 2.5GB per album, a 1TB drive isn’t terribly huge if you consider that. (24/192 album about the same size, 24/96 bit more than 1GB, standard CD around 700MB, using the same album in different format as a reference).
This player has no digital output, so you strictly use the internal DAC.
I have nothing against this player in fact I really like its outlook too and positive it should sound great, but I am not keen on being tied to one equipment, especially when it comes to digital product which as we know changes every other year. |
