You really have good memory. Many years ago, we have group purchase of similar product. So I can share some experience with this type of design architecture. Of course, now is much higher speed going to USB 3.0 which is great.
First thing we need to find out is that whether it is a "hybrid optical + copper cable" or "pure optical" cable. In the old days, that product has both version.
1/ "hybrid optical + copper cable" does not require power supply on the other end. i.e. there is 5V DC power connection together with optical transmission of signal. It seems to me this new Corning cable is this type.
2/ "pure optical cable" would require the other side to supply a 5V power to the circuit handling the signal transmission.
By reading the product information, it seems to me that this Corning product is "hybrid optical + copper cable" as the other side does not require a power supply. If that is the case, it is not electrically isolated.
In the old days, the product I used has both versions and I have chosen "pure optical cable" version and added a battery power supply on the other side.
While many would think that optical isolation must be better, I think we need to test it to find it out. The quality of the electrical <-> optical <-> electrical circuit is key.
And if it is "hybrid optical + copper cable" design, the 5V DC power is transmitted on a pair of thin cable over a long distance which is not good due to the cable resistance. Ching with diy skills may want to open the other end and power it with a high quality 5V DC power supply. That is probably essential modification needed.
