It has to match with your Cartridge's output and preamp's sensitivity.  For my case, using a 0.2MV cartridge and medium sensitivity preamp, I need to use maximum gain for the XP15.  But most cartridge these days are around 0.5mv so you may try 66db gain first.  BTW, using balance output for the XP15 has higher gain but have tried some experiment with it and seems single end output sounds better in my opinion :)
